Siliguri College is one of the largest institutions of this region having a roll strength of roud about 3300. students distributed into twenty-five (25) departments including two (2) for Vocational (add-on) courses and one (1) for a professional one.
It was with a view to catering to the need of a nascent township that a section of the elite of the post – partition Siliguri came forward to set up an intermediate College, and their sincere efforts came to fruition in the shape of a small educational institute named Siliguri College.
Siliguri College was set up on the 8th of October 1950 under a dispersal scheme of the Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation Department of the Government of West Bengal with a view to imparting higher education to the refugee student population of the post-partition Siliguri. The affiliation of the College initially lay with the Calcutta University and it was after the inception of the University of North Bengal in the year 1962, that the College came to be affiliated to the latter. The throbbing centre of a strategically important area, Siliguri started growing with incredible speed after the Sino-Indian border dispute in 1962 and the birth of Bangladesh accelerated the process in the early seventies. Uninterrupted flow of population from the neighbouring areas and absence of any other quality institutions of higher education in the locality as well as strategic location of Siliguri necessitated the introduction of professional, job oriented and new emerging disciplines like Journalism, B.C.A., Travel and Tourism Management, Computer Application, Microbiology and Computer Science etc.
One of the objectives was to provide as much flexibility as possible in choice of subject combination to the students and we are happy to add that we do offer as many as 153 possible combinations at present out of a range of 22 general subjects along with 2 vocational subjects and one professional programme.
A methodical approach right from the admission to examination, constant monitoring in the percentage of attendance of the students in classes and strict rules followed in promotional and test examinations led to a remarkable result in the University examinations.
In the year 2008, as many as fourteen students have topped in the University Examinations. Where over all pass percentage is almost 95%. This year nine students from the Science Stream has been given direct appointment by Satyam Computers, after they qualified in the various pre-requisites and screening in a Campus Interview that was held in the month of November. The recruited students will be joining the organization after their graduation. Various other organizations of repute like TCS, WIPRO BPO and others are also regularly recruiting students through campus interviews. American Center, Doordarshan and other organizations regularly organize various workshops, seminars along with the Departments of English and Journalism.
Seminar Lecture Series have already been started to motivate students for academic excellence. Siliguri College authority is intending to publish some of these articles in the form of Journals in future. This will help build the basic infrastructure for looking beyond of time.
The amazing speed with which the city has expanded during the last two decades led to the formation of a considerable number of degree Colleges with honours in various subjects. Inevitable result of this phenomenon has been an incredible increase in the number of students seeking admission to P.G. Courses in a variety of subjects. The College at this juncture can hardly help thinking of upgrading itself into an institution of excellence with a provision for P.G. Courses and Research facilities to keep pace with the development of this region. The College is intending to open few more job oriented “add-on” Courses, which according to new U.G.C circular can be availed by an existing student parallel to their general course of study.
The College also has a Career Counseling Cell that provides information on the various career prospects for Science and Arts graduates. It also organizes various career oriented awareness programmes and skill enhancement workshops in the campus. Recently, an Australian Career Consultant addressed the students of the college for the improvement of language skills.
College is heading towards excellence by applying to proper authority for assistance under the scheme “Colleges with Potential for Excellence” and establishing UGC NETWORK RESOURCE CENTRE at Siliguri College.
To attract students more to the institutional arena for class room teaching, programmes like “ ROUND UP SESSION”, which was conceived by The West Bengal College and University Teachers’ Association ( W.B.C.U.T.A), Siliguri College Unit, and successfully implemented by the teachers of Siliguri College, will be reorganized for the benefit of the students specially those, who are incapable of taking extra coaching as well as for extra meritorious students, who are above average and requires extra attention.
Thus with the active co-operation of the teachers, non-teaching staff, students and their guardians, Siliguri College is looking forward to be a distinguished centre of learning and research in future.
